Bollywood to Hollywood. After finishing my Bachelors in Fine Art in Mumbai, I looked around the advertising landscape in India and decided I wanted something more. So I left for the U.S. and ended up in San Francisco, where I earned a Masters in Advertising from the Academy of Art College. While getting my book together in my last semester, I got my first job at HWY1 Advertising, a local boutique shop in SF. Like much of everything in San Francisco around the turn of the century, it shut its doors, a victim of the dotcom debacle. From there headed East to a low profile agency called SpikeDDB in NY. I worked directly under the Spike Lee, who most likely mistook me for African American, on brands like Pepsi, Jaguar and McDonalds, just to name a few. But it worked out okay. I left with valuable experience, and three nicknames - N-Raj, Raj Z and for some reason Naj (Spike's favorite). Then one fine morning I received a call from a former teacher in Los Angeles asking me to come work with him at Colby and Partners. Done deal. Together at Colby, we kicked major butt for Warner Brothers, Red Tail Ale, Golds Gym, Suzuki, Chandon Sparkling Wine and California Avocados. We won numerous industry awards, all which still mean nothing to anyone back home. Anyway, after all this I recently asked myself: Niraj, Raj-Z, N-Raj, Naj, (I get confused myself) have you accomplished all you want to in advertising? My answer: not even close."
